“Trump Administration Imposes 50% Tariffs on Canadian Goods”

Date:

The Trump administration implemented a fresh set of tariffs on Canadian goods late Saturday after failed trade negotiations between the two countries. Prime Minister Mark Carney vowed to retaliate equally against the U.S. following the imposition of 50 per cent tariffs on various products. While both sides were close to reaching an agreement, Canada could not agree to the final terms put forward by the U.S., leading to the suspension of trade talks.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer expressed disappointment over Canada’s refusal to finalize the trade deal under the previously agreed terms. The breakdown in negotiations was attributed to new demands and changes in commitments by Canada, disrupting the progress made in recent days.

The escalating trade dispute includes the U.S. imposing significant tariffs on Canadian goods, prompting Canada to consider counter-tariffs. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce warned that the new American levies would negatively impact North American competitiveness. The affected sectors include electronics, plastics, and various exports from provinces like British Columbia and Quebec.

The latest tariffs are part of Section 338 of the U.S. Tariff Act, allowing for tariffs of up to 50 per cent on countries deemed harmful to the American economy. The affected goods no longer receive exemptions under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement, CUSMA, intensifying the trade tensions between the two nations.
