South Park seems to be following in the footsteps of Donald Trump by changing its name for the upcoming 29th season to South America. This move is a satirical jab at the U.S. president’s penchant for renaming geographical features to include “America.”
Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone announced the name change, inspired by tech giants Apple and Google, who have shown similar rebranding boldness. The decision also takes a subtle dig at the show’s parent company Paramount, owned by David Ellison, who has faced allegations of making a side deal with Trump for the Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery merger.
Trump’s renaming spree began with the Gulf of Mexico, now dubbed Gulf of America, and more recently, Lake Ontario becoming Lake America. While some entities have resisted adopting these changes, Apple and Google have faced criticism for complying with Trump’s directives on their maps.
The rechristening of South Park to South America comes amidst Trump’s suggestion to rename New Mexico to New America. Whether this name change is a short-lived gag or a running theme for the new season remains to be seen, aligning with the show’s tradition of mocking Trump and his presidency.
Despite Trump’s disdain, South Park continues to push boundaries with its irreverent humor, including lampooning the former president and his administration. The Emmy-winning series, known for its provocative content since 1997, is set to premiere its new season on Sept. 16 on Comedy Central and the following day on Paramount+ in Canada.
