The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have detained a minor in Montreal over suspected terrorism activities. According to a recent statement from the RCMP, the individual, described as a “young man,” was allegedly planning an attack on a local school in the city. It is reported that he utilized artificial intelligence in the planning stages and made threatening posts on Telegram, targeting various communities including Muslims, Haitians, and 2SLGBTQ+ individuals.
Sgt. Érique Gasse, a spokesperson for the RCMP, mentioned that the FBI provided tips a few weeks ago regarding the individual’s intentions to carry out an attack. The minor was apprehended at his residence on Friday morning as part of an investigation led by the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team, a collaborative effort among different agencies to combat terrorist activities that threaten Canada’s national security.
The ongoing investigation involves the gathering of electronic devices and other potential evidence from the minor’s home to aid in the case. The RCMP’s primary goal is to disrupt the suspected activities of the individual and potentially obtain a peace bond for monitoring and de-escalation measures. The young man is currently undergoing questioning by investigators and is expected to appear in youth court on Saturday, with the possibility of facing charges in the future.
