Authorities have officially announced the passing of a third individual at the Burning Man festival, following the recent disclosure of two other fatalities during the yearly gathering in the Nevada desert. The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office released a statement confirming the death of Armando Ramirez from Truckee, Calif., who passed away while en route to a hospital in Reno, Nev., approximately 190 kilometers south of the festival. Ramirez, aged 51, was declared deceased in the ambulance during the early hours of Friday. The examiner’s office mentioned that the cause and manner of death are pending further testing and assured that no foul play was suspected.
The festival, known for its focus on art installations and self-expression over a week in the desert, had also reported two additional deaths, which were verified by the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday. Craigh Mann, aged 60, was discovered deceased around 3 p.m. local time on Saturday, according to the festival’s statement. The sheriff’s office, referring to him as Craig Mann, stated that he was found in a trailer he shared with his partner. Another festival attendee, a man in his mid-50s identified as Sampson Tshombe, suffered a medical emergency and was pronounced dead after receiving immediate medical attention. Tshombe passed away at the festival’s temporary hospital on Thursday.
Authorities confirmed that there were no indications of foul play in the deaths of Mann and Tshombe, but both cases would undergo autopsy and toxicology screenings, with the results expected in six to eight weeks. This year marks the festival’s 40th anniversary, commencing on August 30 and concluding on Monday. The event draws tens of thousands of participants annually to camp in the wilderness and engage in unconventional performances, culminating in the burning of a large wooden sculpture resembling a man.
While the festival has experienced fatalities in the past, with more than seven deaths reported since its relocation from Baker Beach in San Francisco to the Black Rock desert in 1990, the Pershing County sheriff and coroner, Jerry Allen, noted that the festival typically witnesses an average of one fatality per year, as reported by NBC News.
