On the same day, Transit Watch received multiple reports from riders concerning harassment, drug usage in public, drug transactions, a fire ignited at a bus stop, and an individual brandishing a flame lighter within a transit hub. Despite the City of Edmonton’s ongoing efforts to enhance safety on public transit by bolstering the presence of peace officers and law enforcement officials, expanding outreach teams, and investing more in cleaning and security enhancements, text messages sent to the reporting line earlier this year indicate persistent apprehensions among many commuters regarding safety within the transit system.
A collection of text messages obtained by CBC News, spanning from mid-February to mid-March through an Access to Information Act request, underscored recurring reports from various city areas about drug-related activities and smoking in LRT stations, bus stops, and pedestrian walkways. Concerns ranged from drug use involving substances like meth, crack, and fentanyl on transit premises to instances of verbal abuse and hate speech directed at passengers under the influence. Reports also highlighted encounters with drug deals, discovery of drug paraphernalia, public urination, disturbances, and obstructions.
Furthermore, riders communicated incidents such as discovering a used condom inside a ticket machine at Davies Transit Centre, pools of blood at the Belvedere Transit Station, acts of vandalism, physical altercations, and threats of violence within transit facilities. Regular transit user Katarina Hamilton, who contacts Transit Watch monthly, shared experiences of witnessing disruptive behaviors including fires and blockages, particularly during late-night hours, emphasizing the need for more peace officers and increased surveillance on buses to enhance rider safety.
Despite ongoing safety measures and initiatives by Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) to address rider concerns, including the addition of peace officers and community outreach teams, data from rider surveys in 2025 indicated a consistent perception of safety among transit users compared to the previous year. ETS acknowledged the complexity of shaping riders’ safety perceptions, citing various contributing factors and an increase in texts to Transit Watch during colder months.
To further improve transit safety and address public concerns, ETS is enacting several strategies such as deploying additional peace officers, enhancing community engagement, providing travel assistance, and upgrading infrastructure at stations. City council members, including Coun. Anne Stevenson, emphasized the importance of addressing root causes of social disorder and supporting initiatives like safety attendants to mitigate safety challenges within the transit system.
