“Study Investigates Health Risks of Airborne Lake Erie Algae”

Residents living near Lake Erie are well-acquainted with cautions regarding blue-green algae blooms. Advisories recommend avoiding swimming in the water, keeping pets away, and refraining from ingesting it due to potential health risks like skin irritation, throat discomfort, and eye redness. Apart from direct contact with the algae, a new concern arises about airborne algae particles that can be inhaled, leading researchers to investigate the health implications.

Led by Professor David Kennedy from the University of Toledo’s Great Lakes Center for Freshwater and Human Health, a study is underway to understand the impact of airborne algae toxins on human health. The ongoing Great Lakes Aerosol Monitoring Research Study (GLAMR) focuses on individuals frequenting the western basin of Lake Erie region, examining potential health risks and susceptibility variations among participants.

The study, now halfway through its initial phase, has garnered samples from around 200 individuals, tracking their responses to the toxins. Preliminary findings indicate varying sensitivities among participants, with some showing more pronounced reactions than others. Researchers emphasize the importance of understanding susceptibility to better address public health concerns and mitigate potential risks.

Participants are requested to report their well-being during peak bloom periods and off-seasons, providing blood, urine, breath, and nasal samples for analysis. Experts highlight the potential long-term health effects of inhaling algae toxins, emphasizing that respiratory exposure may have more significant health implications compared to ingestion.

The study also sheds light on the dispersal of airborne algae toxins, highlighting how the particles can travel considerable distances and linger in the air for extended periods. Researchers aim to define these dispersal patterns further to assess potential risks to coastal communities and beyond. Algae toxins, when aerosolized, may trigger symptoms akin to asthma, often observed during peak bloom seasons, leading to what locals refer to as the “August cough.”

Experts underline the need for a better understanding of the airborne algae’s health impacts and stress the importance of proactive measures. By providing insights into the hazardous nature of airborne algae, the study aims to empower communities to take precautionary steps, such as using air purifiers during high-risk periods.

The research endeavors to offer a comprehensive assessment of airborne algae exposure risks, urging individuals to remain vigilant and proactive in safeguarding their health amidst the potential environmental hazards posed by Lake Erie’s algae blooms.
