Lucas Brehaut, a wildfire researcher, is facing challenges with local wildlife in Newfoundland disrupting his forest fire regeneration study. Despite the cooler and wetter climate in Atlantic Canada, forest fires are becoming more frequent. Brehaut’s research involves monitoring how forests regenerate in a warming climate post-fire by using open-top chambers (OTCs) to simulate temperature increases. However, his equipment is being damaged by curious animals like caribou, moose, black bears, wolves, rabbits, and owls.
Out of the 19 sites set up for the study, 11 have suffered damage due to animal interference, with some animals even stealing temperature sensors. Brehaut referred to one specific site as the “Problem Child” due to recurring damages. While animals like moose and rabbits occasionally graze inside the greenhouses without causing harm, the overall impact on the research equipment has been significant.
Kaitlyn Gaynor, a professor at the University of British Columbia, explained that animals are naturally curious about new objects in their habitat, especially intelligent species like bears. The animals are attracted to the scent left behind by researchers on the equipment. Gaynor suggested that researchers minimize their presence in the field, reduce their scent, and camouflage equipment to lessen animal disruptions.
Animal interference is a global issue, as Gaynor has experienced similar challenges with wildlife in Mozambique during her fieldwork. Baboons, hyenas, and elephants have been known to disrupt research equipment, with elephants being particularly destructive due to their size and intelligence. Gaynor highlighted animals as the primary cause of equipment loss or failure in research projects.
Despite the challenges posed by wildlife, Brehaut remains understanding, acknowledging that researchers are visitors in the animals’ territory. He has also encountered issues with human interference, such as snowmobiles accidentally damaging his research sites during snowy winters in Newfoundland.
The disruption caused by animals in research projects is a common phenomenon globally, and researchers like Brehaut and Gaynor continue to navigate these challenges to advance scientific understanding in their respective fields.
