“Mayor Urges Enhanced Police Presence Amid Gun Violence Surge”

Date:

The mayor of Fort St. John is urging for increased provincial police resources to address a recent surge in gun violence near local schools in northeastern B.C.

This request follows what authorities believe was the third targeted shooting at a residence in the city on Friday night.

Limited information has been disclosed at this time, with no suspects currently identified by the police.

Mayor Lilia Hansen is advocating for the deployment of B.C.’s gang task force to quell the escalating violence within the city.

“One incident of shooting is distressing, two is concerning, and three indicates a critical situation that must be halted,” remarked Hansen.

“Enhanced law enforcement presence is imperative,” she added.

Authorities state that they are prioritizing the investigation into a series of shootings that commenced on July 22, resulting in at least one individual sustaining injuries and later facing charges.

Although confirmation on injuries from the recent Friday shooting is pending from law enforcement and B.C. Emergency Health Services, local witnesses reported observing one person being transported to the hospital by ambulance, with suspicions of additional injuries.

Sgt. Jaime Moffat emphasized that the detachment’s serious crime and street enforcement units, in collaboration with frontline officers, are actively engaged in identifying and apprehending suspects.

“We acknowledge the anxiety these incidents instill,” stated Moffat in an official release.

“Substantial efforts are being made to pinpoint the perpetrators and prevent further violence.”

Mounting Concerns as School Resumption Nears

Residents residing near the site of the recent shooting on Friday expressed surprise and dismay over the sudden upsurge in violence within the city.

Each shooting incident unfolded in close proximity to local elementary and middle schools.

“In a small community like Fort St. John, witnessing such violence in such close proximity to your residence, where your children are asleep, is unexpected,” articulated Thomas Whitton, a father of four.

Whitton disclosed that three of his children had passed by the targeted residence merely an hour before the gunfire erupted around 10 p.m.

The front door of the home displayed visible bullet holes on Saturday afternoon, while police canines and search-and-rescue volunteers scoured a nearby park for evidence.

“The potential for tragedy looms large, and that is unsettling,” expressed Whitton.

Whitton stressed the necessity for governmental support to equip law enforcement and judicial systems with resources to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure their incarceration
