Australian beef is being sold in Canadian supermarkets at lower prices compared to Canadian beef, raising concerns among some producers while providing a more affordable option to consumers. Tyler Fulton, president of the Canadian Cattle Association, noted that Australian beef has been available in the Canadian market for years, with recent increased visibility, especially for steak cuts.
Fulton explained that the pricing disparity is influenced by various factors, including the grass-based production model in Australia, resulting in leaner beef with less marbling, which may not align with Canadian preferences. Retailers also utilize a ‘loss leader’ strategy to attract customers with lower-priced imported beef.
Since the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) took effect in 2018, Australia has gained increased access to the Canadian beef market. Fulton emphasized that while imported beef fills a temporary supply gap, Canadian producers have confidence in the quality of their beef compared to Australian imports.
Consumer perspectives were gathered at Loblaws-owned stores in Regina, with one shopper, Karen Novak, expressing difficulty affording beef and resorting to alternative proteins due to high prices. Others like Jordan Fieseler opt to purchase beef in bulk from local sources for sustainability reasons.
Loblaws responded to concerns by stating that market pricing differences are influenced by North American cattle supply constraints and increased Australian beef production. They reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Canadian beef producers while offering customers choice and value.
Fulton remains optimistic about domestic growth opportunities for Canadian producers, emphasizing the importance of the local market despite expanding international prospects. He highlighted recent growth in the Canadian beef sector and anticipates continued positive trends due to incentives for producers.
