A tragic incident occurred early Sunday in Hungary when a passenger bus carrying Polish tourists veered off the road and overturned in a ditch, resulting in 12 fatalities and multiple injuries. The accident took place on the eastbound lanes close to Mezokeresztes in the M3 motorway, approximately 140 kilometers east of Budapest, around 1 a.m.
Authorities mentioned that the bus driver, suspected of falling asleep at the wheel, has been detained for questioning. The National Directorate for Disaster Management of Hungary reported that among the 59 passengers and two drivers on board, several individuals were trapped beneath the overturned bus.
According to the Polish Foreign Ministry spokesperson, all individuals involved in the bus accident hold Polish citizenship. They were returning from a pilgrimage in Bosnia-Herzegovina, as stated by the regional government in Rzeszow, Poland.
Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar confirmed that at least 10 individuals sustained severe injuries in the crash. He extended his condolences to the victims’ families and expressed gratitude to the emergency responders who swiftly arrived at the scene. Polish President Karol Nawrocki also mourned the tragedy, offering prayers and sympathy to the affected families and loved ones.
