At the Pan Pacific championships in Irvine, Calif., Canadian swimmers Taylor Ruck and Summer McIntosh had contrasting performances on Friday night.
Ruck secured a silver medal in the women’s 100m butterfly and later grabbed bronze as part of the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team, adding to her tally of four and five medals, respectively, at the event.
In the 100m butterfly, the 26-year-old from Kelowna, B.C., set a personal best time of 56.71 seconds, finishing behind American Gretchen Walsh, who clocked 55.15. Australian Alexandria Perkins claimed the bronze with a time of 56.75.
Ruck expressed her satisfaction with her performance, citing good rest and trust in her preparation for her success. McIntosh, on the other hand, faced disappointment after failing to qualify for the A final in the women’s 400m freestyle event despite winning the B final.
Taking full responsibility for the setback, McIntosh acknowledged her misjudgment and vowed to learn from the experience. Despite the setback, she remains focused on her upcoming races, including the 200m IM.
On the men’s side, Canadians Blake Tierney and Ethan Ekk secured silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s 200m backstroke. Tierney, who claimed his first international gold in the men’s 100m backstroke earlier, emphasized the importance of dedicated training.
Ruck continued her successful run by leading Canada to a bronze in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay event. While the Canadian women’s team excelled, the men’s 4x100m freestyle team narrowly missed out on a podium finish.
Overall, the competition showcased a mix of triumphs and challenges for Canadian swimmers, highlighting their resilience and determination in the face of stiff competition.
