Jennifer Broyden, aged 24, suffers from an autoimmune condition that targets her muscles and skin, leading to her skin burning, blistering, and peeling within 15 seconds of UV ray exposure.
Jennifer, a master’s student, developed the sun allergy in 2021 as a consequence of her dermatomyositis, a chronic autoimmune inflammatory illness that causes muscle weakness, pain, and a distinct skin rash on specific body parts. Her skin has become highly sensitive to sunlight, causing intolerable reactions such as rapid muscle weakness, mobility loss, painful rashes all over her body, and extreme fatigue.
Despite initial misattributions of her symptoms to stress or depression, Jennifer’s condition worsened, prompting a specialist visit in December 2021 where dermatomyositis was diagnosed. Exposure to sunlight triggers severe reactions, with even short durations leading to skin burning, blistering, and peeling. Everyday activities like sitting near a window can also provoke skin reactions.
Jennifer has adapted her lifestyle to manage her condition, utilizing strategies like applying high SPF sunscreen, wearing UV-protective clothing, gloves, hats, and sunglasses, and using UV-protective hair products.
