A teacher who worked at a prestigious boarding school with an annual fee of £46,000 has been prohibited from teaching following reports of excessive and inappropriate communication with a teenage student. James Samson, aged 46 and a father of two, was responsible for geography classes and served as a form tutor at Luckley House School in Berkshire.
Over a span of a year, Samson bombarded the young student with late-night messages via texts and emails after obtaining her contact details. Some of the messages contained questionable content, such as insinuating secretive meetings and expressing personal enjoyment in the student’s presence during revision sessions.
The disciplinary panel discovered that Samson had reached out to the student through various means like WhatsApp, email, and texts between February 2023 and May 2024, including sending messages during inappropriate hours like on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve, which violated school regulations.
The student, feeling uneasy and deeming the messages as uncharacteristic of a teacher, reported her discomfort with the situation. Following an investigation prompted by concerns raised in June 2024, Samson was dismissed approximately a month later. Testimonies suggested that Samson’s actions could be construed as early signs of grooming behavior.
The panel concluded that Samson’s conduct breached professional boundaries, deeming it highly inappropriate and falling significantly short of expected standards. School regulations explicitly prohibit teachers from sharing personal contact information with students and engaging with them on social media platforms, emphasizing communication through official school channels only.
The panel’s report highlighted that Samson’s behavior, including procuring the student’s phone number and engaging in inappropriate communication, constituted serious misconduct that deviated substantially from professional norms.
