An easyJet flight originally scheduled from Edinburgh to the Canary Islands had to be rerouted to London due to a situation concerning passenger welfare on board. The flight, identified as EZY3201 en route to Tenerife, took off from Edinburgh Airport at 3:35 pm on Wednesday. While the Airbus A320 was supposed to arrive at Tenerife South Airport around 8:05 pm, it was redirected to Gatwick Airport following the welfare-related incident.
Flight tracking data from Flightradar24 displayed the aircraft’s path, initially heading southwest at approximately 35,000 feet over Brittany in northwest France before changing direction to the northeast towards London. The plane landed safely at Gatwick Airport shortly after 5:30 pm, as reported by the Daily Record.
easyJet confirmed that the diversion was necessary due to a welfare issue but did not disclose further specifics. Notably, the flight crew did not use a squawk 7700 code, which typically signifies a general emergency.
In an online message to passengers, easyJet expressed regret for the diversion, attributing it to a welfare concern deemed beyond their control and classified as an extraordinary circumstance. The airline assured passengers that the flight would be refueled promptly for continuation to Tenerife, with an estimated departure time from Gatwick at 9:45 pm and an expected arrival in Tenerife around 2:30 am local time.
