Famous for their appearance in the movie “The Beach,” these islands have attracted a surge in visitors seeking to experience the picturesque Maya Bay. However, the reality of the destination now contrasts starkly with the serene image portrayed in the film.
Recent footage from Koh Phi Phi depicts a massive crowd of tourists tightly packed near the dock, hinting at the overwhelming number of visitors. This video, shared on Reddit, has garnered negative reactions from viewers expressing disappointment with the overcrowded conditions.
Despite efforts to address overtourism, challenges persist in managing the influx of tourists to Koh Phi Phi. Restrictions such as timed entries, boat limits, and bans on sunscreen in the water have been implemented to protect the environment and wildlife.
Jub Yata, a destination manager at Intrepid Travel, emphasized the need for responsible tourism practices to prevent overwhelming popular destinations like Maya Bay. Intrepid Travel has been redirecting tourists to alternative locations such as Koh Thap, Koh Poda, and Koh Khai to offer a more sustainable and enjoyable experience.
Koh Thap, known for its unique parting of the seas phenomenon called Talay Waek, is a highlight of many island-hopping tours in the Krabi region. In contrast, Koh Poda offers a tranquil and secluded ambiance, described by one traveler as reminiscent of a deserted island paradise.
Koh Khai in Phuket stands out as a developed and frequented destination on Intrepid tours, comprising three small islands with opportunities for snorkeling and swimming. With a focus on promoting responsible tourism, Intrepid Travel aims to alleviate the strain on overcrowded locations and offer visitors a more enriching travel experience.
