Luke Tryl, the UK director of More in Common, highlighted Makerfield as an ideal location for Reform to excel in, noting that a majority of the area’s voters supported Leave in the 2016 Brexit referendum. However, the entry of Andy Burnham, the popular Greater Manchester Mayor, into the by-election race has added a new dynamic.
Tryl emphasized the potential impact of the “Andy Burnham factor” on the by-election, portraying Burnham as an outsider to the traditional system. The outcome of the by-election holds significant implications for Burnham’s political future, with a defeat potentially dashing his aspirations for becoming Prime Minister.
On the other side, Reform is gearing up for a strong campaign, aiming to prove their ability to challenge Burnham in Makerfield. Local plumber Robert Kenyon, the chosen candidate for Reform, sees this as a crucial battle, describing it as a David versus Goliath scenario.
Reform’s strategy includes portraying Burnham as detached from the area, insinuating that he prioritizes personal gain over community interests. Nevertheless, Burnham’s strong local connections and popularity among residents may play a vital role in determining the election’s outcome.
