Shabana Mahmood, the Home Secretary and MP for Birmingham Ladywood, is not just a former barrister but also a skilled weightlifter, capable of deadlifting 105 kg. During a public appearance at London’s Duchess Theatre, she fearlessly shut down a heckler criticizing her immigration policies with a strong response.
She shared her passion for weightlifting, revealing her personal best deadlift of 105 kg and her ongoing training to reach that level again. Shabana, born in Birmingham to Pakistani parents, reminisced about her childhood and her interest in weightlifting, which she discovered over a decade ago to improve her health and fitness.
In her role as Home Secretary since September 2025, Shabana oversees police, immigration, and border security, implementing significant reforms to the asylum system. Despite her tough stance on immigration, she finds solace in weightlifting as a personal challenge and motivator.
Apart from her political responsibilities, Shabana engages in intense workouts, including cardio exercises like pushing a weighted sled, known as the prowler, to enhance strength and endurance. Reflecting on her past experiences working in her parents’ corner shop, she empathizes with the challenges faced by small business owners dealing with shoplifting.
Addressing comments from a political opponent who expressed admiration for her, Shabana humorously dismissed the notion, emphasizing her focus on her work and the security measures in place around her. With a mix of resilience and humor, Shabana navigates both the political arena and her personal fitness pursuits with determination and grace.
