An urgent warning has been issued for Android and iPhone users regarding the use of unofficial chargers. Many new devices no longer include a charger in the box, requiring consumers to purchase one separately. While official chargers can cost at least £20, cheaper alternatives are available online for under £8. However, consumer group Which? has raised concerns about the safety of these unofficial chargers.
Which? conducted tests on chargers bought from various online platforms and discovered alarming results. Nine chargers were found to pose an electric shock risk due to poor manufacturing, while eight were flagged as potential fire or explosion hazards. One charger, priced at £11.99 and resembling an Apple product, turned out to be a counterfeit item failing safety tests.
The investigation also revealed chargers lacking essential UK safety markings and devices with risky internal circuitry that could lead to overheating, fires, or explosions. This is not the first time Which? has highlighted the danger of unsafe electrical products sold online.
Sue Davies, Head of Consumer Protection Policy at Which?, emphasized the serious consequences of poorly designed electrical items and urged the government to enhance product safety laws for online marketplaces. In response, Amazon stated its commitment to customer safety and confirmed the removal of identified problematic chargers from its platform. B&Q also emphasized product safety and proactive measures to prevent the sale of recalled items on its marketplace.
Consumers are advised to purchase chargers from reputable retailers or trusted brands like Apple, Belkin, Anker, and Samsung to avoid potential safety risks associated with cheaper alternatives. Prioritizing safety over savings is crucial in ensuring the wellbeing of device users.
