eBay Launches Authenticity Guarantee for UK Trading Cards

Date:

eBay has introduced a significant change affecting trading card buyers and sellers. The online marketplace is launching the Authenticity Guarantee service for trading cards in the UK. Under this service, sellers must send eligible trading cards to eBay’s authentication facility for a physical inspection conducted by Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA).

Upon assessment, the card will be dispatched to the buyer with an e-tag containing a unique QR code affixed to the card’s protective packaging. This QR code allows buyers to access information regarding the card and its authentication.

Initially, the authentication service will be available for eligible trading cards, including collectible card games, sports trading cards, and non-sports cards, priced at £500 and above. By June, the eligibility will extend to all trading cards priced at £500 and above. The Authenticity Guarantee service, which is currently utilized for various categories such as trainers, luxury watches, and handbags, does not entail additional costs for buyers.

eBay noted the continued strong demand for trading cards, with popular brands like Pokémon and Formula 1 driving interest. Notable trading cards like Charizard ex and Ancient Mew were among the most searched items in 2025, with Lando Norris ranking as the most searched British athlete on the platform.

The highest-priced trading card sold in the UK was a rare 1999 Pokemon 1st Edition Shadowless Charizard Base Set Holo Rare #4 BGS 9 MINT, fetching £16,500. Adam Ireland, the Vice President and General Manager of Global Collectables at eBay, emphasized the importance of trust in the collectibles industry, highlighting eBay’s expertise and innovation in the field.

Following a $1.2 billion (£890 million) deal to acquire the Depop second-hand clothing app earlier this year, eBay aims to appeal to a younger demographic for sustainable long-term growth. The deal is set to conclude in the second quarter, with Depop retaining its brand, platform, and culture. Executives from both eBay and Depop expressed enthusiasm about the partnership and its potential to enhance the marketplace experience for buyers and sellers.
