Labour leader Keir Starmer expressed his frustration at being kept uninformed about Peter Mandelson’s vetting failure by officials during a heated session in the Commons. The Prime Minister criticized the Foreign Office for withholding critical information and apologized once more for appointing Lord Mandelson as the US ambassador. Starmer asserted that had he been aware of the full extent of Mandelson’s vetting issues, he would have revoked the appointment.
According to Starmer, officials disregarded the recommendation of the United Kingdom Security Vetting by granting Mandelson developed vetting clearance. He emphasized that this decision was not disclosed to him, the Foreign Secretary, the Deputy Prime Minister, other Ministers, or even Sir Chris Wormald, the former Cabinet Secretary. Starmer condemned the deliberate withholding of information as unacceptable and contrary to public expectations of transparency and accountability.
In an upcoming meeting of the Middle East response committee, Starmer aims to shift focus towards addressing the impact of the Iran conflict on the cost of living for families. Despite his determination to assist working people, Starmer’s efforts may be overshadowed by testimonies from Sir Olly Robbins, whom Starmer recently dismissed as Foreign Office permanent secretary. This development poses a potential political challenge for the Prime Minister.
A close associate of Sir Olly expressed empathy, describing him as deeply affected by recent events. Starmer defended his decision to dismiss Sir Olly, citing discrepancies in his explanation regarding the vetting process. Additionally, Starmer reiterated his regret for appointing Mandelson as UK ambassador to the US, acknowledging the harm caused to victims of Jeffrey Epstein.
A Labour MP commended Starmer’s handling of the situation and raised concerns about the relationship between the government and non-elected civil service officials. Starmer did not address allegations that No10 rushed to confirm Mandelson’s ambassadorship following a leak. The day saw further controversy as two MPs were expelled from the Commons for disruptive behavior.
