“Government Official Faces Scrutiny Over Mandelson Vetting”

Date:

A high-ranking government official is under scrutiny regarding the vetting process of Lord Peter Mandelson, raising concerns for Keir Starmer over the appointment.

Cat Little, the top official at the Cabinet Office, is set to testify before the Foreign Affairs Committee to address how Lord Mandelson received clearance despite objections from security officials.

Following the dismissal of Sir Olly Robbins by the Prime Minister for failing to disclose that Lord Mandelson was sent to Washington by the Foreign Office despite security concerns, Little defended her decision not to relay the information and criticized No10 for its dismissive approach to vetting, alleging pressure to expedite the appointment.

Little disclosed that she personally sought vetting details from UK Security Vetting after Sir Olly declined to share the information, emphasizing her commitment to fulfilling her responsibilities and advising the Prime Minister appropriately.

After a thorough examination of the evidence, Little maintained that she adhered to due process in the vetting of Lord Mandelson, asserting that the final decision rested with the Foreign Office based on recommendations from security professionals.

Moreover, Little clarified that she refrained from immediately informing the Prime Minister due to the need for legal guidance given the sensitive nature of the security information involved.

In response to queries about Sir Olly Robbins’ involvement and access to information, Little refrained from commenting and emphasized the importance of maintaining confidentiality regarding the vetting process.

Furthermore, Little underscored that her role as the Cabinet Office Secretary involves overseeing services provided to other departments, including UK Security Vetting, without direct involvement in day-to-day operations.

Regarding the alleged Cabinet division over the Mandelson issue, a government minister dismissed such claims as baseless, asserting unity within the Cabinet and a focus on the job at hand.

In addressing the fallout from the Mandelson scandal, Keir Starmer’s former aide, Morgan McSweeney, will also testify before MPs, following his resignation amid controversy surrounding Lord Mandelson’s appointment as US ambassador.

In light of the ongoing developments, Little’s appearance before the Foreign Affairs Committee is crucial in shedding light on the vetting procedures concerning Lord Peter Mandelson.
