Sweden’s military chief has raised concerns about a possible Russian move to capture Gotland Island. Chief of Defence Michael Claesson cautioned that Moscow could initiate a land seizure “at any moment” to test NATO’s resolve. Claesson emphasized that the operation wouldn’t need to be extensive but rather to make a statement and observe the ensuing political reactions.
While NATO exercises have historically focused on a potential Russian ground assault in the alliance’s eastern regions, attention is shifting to the Baltic Sea. Recent war games have simulated potential Russian incursions on strategically important islands like Gotland in Sweden, Bornholm in Denmark, and Hiiumaa and Saaremaa in Estonia.
Swedish military intelligence has warned that Russia could escalate conflicts in the coming years and potentially redeploy troops closer to NATO territories. This caution follows US President Donald Trump’s criticisms of NATO allies for what he perceives as inadequate support during the Iran conflict. Trump, speaking at an event in Arizona, underscored the need for self-reliance, stating, “If NATO teaches us anything, it is that we must depend on ourselves and not external sources.”
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned the US decision to extend Russia’s authorization to sell oil despite Western sanctions. This extension allows the purchase of Russian oil and petroleum products already aboard vessels at sea until May 16. The US rationale for this waiver is to alleviate energy supply challenges stemming from the US-Israel-Iran conflict.
Zelensky criticized the move, stating that every dollar spent on Russian oil supports the war in Ukraine. Sanctions against Russia have been in place since President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
