Jon Kortmansky was traveling for work when his wife, Lori, stumbled upon their future dream residence. She fell in love with it instantly and placed the highest bid they could afford in 2005, even before Jon had seen it.
Describing the one-bedroom apartment in New York’s Upper East Side, Jon reminisces about Lori’s immediate connection to its dark, almost black wooden floors. Being an interior designer, Lori dedicated herself to turning their home into something extraordinary. A decade later, the couple acquired the adjacent apartment, demolished the dividing wall, and fashioned their ideal living space.
“We moved into a spacious three-bedroom, three-bathroom apartment with a 240-square-foot balcony just five months later. It was all her touch. Even in her absence, her presence was palpable,” Jon, aged 57, recounts.
Together, they crafted an extraordinary life. Jon’s legal career as a law firm partner allowed them the privilege of extensive travel, with frequent weekend ski trips during winter.
Amid their bustling lives, Lori, Jon’s college sweetheart, harbored a heartbreaking secret from everyone but him—she had been battling brain cancer since her twenties.
Their love story began when Jon, at 18, met Lori at Indiana University. Their friendship matured into romance after two years, and Jon was captivated by Lori’s radiant smile and unwavering positivity towards people.
Two years into their marriage at 25, Lori started experiencing head rushes, eye flutters, and a metallic taste in her mouth. A swift diagnosis revealed an aggressive malignant brain tumor the size of a plum.
Post-diagnosis in 1998, the couple faced a critical decision within 20 minutes regarding starting a family, ahead of an experimental bone marrow treatment that would render Lori infertile.
Despite enduring numerous recurrences, brain surgeries, and radiation treatments over the years, Lori’s resilience and grace left Jon in admiration. She managed to shield her illness from many friends and clients, portraying a facade of normalcy.
Lori established her own business post-diagnosis, learned French, and explored the world, showcasing unwavering courage even as her eyesight deteriorated.
Jon fondly recalls Lori’s adventurous spirit, from skiing in challenging terrains to displaying extraordinary determination post-stroke and surgeries. Her zest for life remained undiminished.
As Lori’s health deteriorated during the Covid era, Jon juggled his legal responsibilities while providing round-the-clock care for her. The financial strain and emotional toll were immense.
In her final 18 months, Lori’s condition worsened, rendering her entirely dependent on Jon for basic needs. Despite sustaining injuries in the process, Jon remained steadfast in his care for her.
Lori passed away in Jon’s arms in April 2021 at the age of 51. The immediate aftermath of her death left Jon in a haze, with memories of their home overshadowed by Lori’s final days.
Overwhelmed by Lori’s legacy within their home, Jon struggled to let go of her belongings and unearthed hidden messages from her past. The apartment became a haunting reminder of their shared life.
Haunted by memories, Jon began experiencing debilitating headaches and avoided returning home, seeking solace elsewhere. With guidance from his sister, he embarked on a journey to rebuild his life.
Upon finding a new home, Jon experienced a sense of relief, marking a fresh beginning. He chose to cherish memories of Lori while focusing on building a new life, embracing happiness and connections.
Jon’s journey of healing and rediscovery led him to a place of peace, where he could honor Lori’s memory while embracing a future filled with hope and new beginnings.
