Tram services in Manchester city center were disrupted this afternoon due to a march organized by Britain First. Supporters of the far-right group gathered near Manchester’s Piccadilly station before proceeding to St Peter’s Square. Concurrently, a counter-protest named Resist Britain First assembled at Piccadilly Gardens, leading to significant disruptions to road and Metrolink services.
The Bee Network confirmed the closure of tram stops at Piccadilly Gardens, Market Street, and St Peter’s Square. A protest in the city center prompted the suspension of cross-city tram services until further notice. Following the presence of counter-protesters blocking tram tracks, the Metrolink service was temporarily halted and later resumed after police intervention.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) stated they are working to ensure safety and minimize disruptions in the Piccadilly Gardens area. To maintain order, police have been granted additional powers, including a Section 34 dispersal order and a Section 60 order allowing enhanced stop and search capabilities and the removal of face coverings.
GMP reported that the majority of participants from both sides are peaceful, emphasizing the right to protest safely. In light of the heightened tensions, a strong police presence has been deployed to monitor the situation, with memories of previous clashes during a Britain First march in February, where 11 arrests were made.
The police are closely monitoring the ongoing protests to prevent any potential disturbances, with hundreds of officers on standby to ensure public safety during the demonstrations.
