The reopening of a bridge, famously known as the “scariest,” has been completed following a maintenance project that cost over £8 million. Rainbow Bridge, located in southeast Texas over the Neches River, has attracted significant online attention due to its unique design. The bridge features a steep incline and a high arch to ensure it does not obstruct shipping activities, resulting in a vertical clearance of 177 feet.
With narrow lanes and operating as a one-way westbound route since 1997, the bridge offers a thrilling experience for motorists traveling between Jefferson and Orange counties. The bridge underwent extensive maintenance last year, with a contract worth $10.9 million awarded to Southern Road and Bridge, a Florida-based company.
The maintenance work included a complete restoration of the concrete deck, repairs to steel railing, and the replacement of 1,200 rivets and four steel member pins. During the closure, motorists had to use alternative routes like the Veterans Memorial Bridge, temporarily adjusted to accommodate the diverted traffic.
The Texas Department of Transportation confirmed the completion of the maintenance works on March 26, after conducting a thorough inspection. Subsequently, the bridge reopened for traffic on April 11, providing a significant relief to motorists. Originally constructed in 1936, the Rainbow Bridge took two years to build.
