In a stunning turn of events, a village with a history spanning over 1,000 years has been left deserted following the evacuation of its residents. This decision was made in 2013, resulting in the relocation of the village’s 500 inhabitants to a new town with the same name located a couple of miles away. Originally, the plan was to establish a large open-cast coal mine in the original village.
Although all former residents had been resettled by 2015, the German village of Morschenich-Alt, also known as Old Morschenich, still stands today. The coal mining project was subsequently abandoned, with attention shifting to the nearby Hambach open-pit lignite mine, covering an extensive area of around 44 square kilometers and reaching depths of 300 meters.
Currently, discussions are underway about rebranding the village and transforming it into a “village of the future.” However, these redevelopment plans have been put on hold, leaving the village, potentially to be named Bürgewald in the future, in a hauntingly empty state. Despite its desolation, a few individuals have chosen to reside in the eerie and deserted village.
Renowned urban explorer Colin, known for his exploits on his Bearded Explorer channel, has explored the ghostly remnants of the village and interacted with some of its scarce inhabitants. During his exploration, Colin stumbled upon unexpected artifacts and highlighted the ambiguity surrounding the future of the village.
Colin expressed his fascination with the ghost town, pondering about the impending fate of the site and acknowledging the encroaching forces of nature reclaiming the abandoned structures. He noted the church’s dilapidated state, mentioning its tragic fire damage that has left little of its former grandeur intact.
Despite the majority of shops and houses in Morschenich being sealed off, some with their entrances bricked up, Colin highlighted the abrupt nature of the evacuation process, leading to potential discontent among former residents. He vividly described the deserted streets, evoking a sense of post-apocalyptic solitude as he navigated the eerily empty pathways.
Surprisingly, amidst the near-total abandonment of Morschenich, Colin encountered a resident who, despite a language barrier, provided insights into the current state of the village. The resident revealed that only eight families now call the village home, with a diverse mix of nationalities replacing the original German inhabitants.
As Colin continued his tour of the village, he observed signs of decay and nature’s gradual reclaiming of the urban landscape, emphasizing the need for rejuvenation efforts. He touched upon the prospects of converting the defunct coal mine into an expansive body of water, acknowledging the community’s transition from abandonment to potential revitalization.
The village underwent a renaming process in July 2024, now known as Bürgewald, symbolizing a shift towards a promising future and community revival. However, uncertainties loom over the fate of the disused mine, with proposals to flood the 19-square-mile pit to create a lake raising questions about the practicality of such a transformation. The future of this once-thriving village remains shrouded in uncertainty, awaiting the unfolding of events that will determine its ultimate destiny.
