“Defining Englishness: Unity Over Division on Saint George’s Day”

Date:

Amidst the ongoing discussions about English identity, there is a diverse range of opinions on what it truly means to be English in today’s society. Some individuals may respond with uncertainty or engage in debates, while others, though proud of their English heritage, may prefer to avoid the subject altogether due to recent attempts by prominent figures to hijack national identity for discriminatory purposes.

While this issue is not new, with past instances like the National Front’s involvement, it remains a significant concern. The danger lies in allowing a minority of individuals to dictate and tarnish the essence of our national identity. Fortunately, the reality is that these racists and bigots represent a small fraction of the population. The vast majority of people recognize that skin color and religion should not define Englishness. Instead, the emphasis is on inclusivity, solidarity, and shared values among fellow citizens.

On Saint George’s Day, there is an opportunity for the silent majority to assert their perspective. It is a chance to emphasize that the English flag symbolizes unity and common values rather than division. Englishness holds different meanings for various individuals, and that diversity is accepted. For instance, a new collection of 50 objects representing English culture is set to launch on Saint George’s Day, showcasing a range of interpretations, from the flag to everyday items like a beach windbreak.

The essence of being English is not singular but revolves around caring for others, fostering a sense of belonging, and upholding shared principles. Traits such as fairness, decency, respectful interaction, queuing etiquette, perseverance in challenging times, and the classic British habit of discussing the weather or lamenting about football are integral to the English identity.

This inclusive and community-focused ethos is exemplified by the initiatives taking place on Saint George’s Day across various cities. Activities such as joint walks by churches and mosques in Birmingham, student-led events in Gravesend, and interfaith gatherings in London demonstrate a dedication to unity and a shared English identity.

As England prepares for the upcoming World Cup, the significance of unity is heightened, marking six decades since the last triumph. The national team, embodying modern England with its diverse composition, aims to unite under one banner for a common goal. It is crucial for the public to offer unwavering support, uniting as one nation to rally behind the team, whether in stadiums, local pubs, or in front of TV screens.

Pride in being English should stem from the current reality rather than an idealized past. It is a time for more individuals to step forward and showcase the true essence of a united England—a nation unified by pride and devoid of prejudice.
