“British Blame Trump for Imminent Energy Cost Surge”

Date:

British citizens are pointing fingers at Donald Trump for the imminent rise in energy costs that will impact households in the UK due to his involvement in the conflict with Iran.

A recent survey conducted by Survation for the End Fuel Poverty Coalition reveals that three-quarters of the population hold the US President accountable for this situation.

Additionally, 65% of respondents place direct blame on the energy sector for the upcoming surge in energy bills.

The frustration is evident as 63% of those surveyed characterize the impending increases as a ‘Trump Tax’ on their energy bills.

This sentiment arises as Trump continues to pressure the UK to resume drilling activities in the North Sea, a move opposed by Keir Starmer’s government which has halted issuing new licenses.

A majority of 64% of respondents believe that the energy industry is capitalizing on the conflict in Iran for profit.

British voters from all political parties are in favor of the Windfall Tax, also known as the Energy Profits Levy, on energy companies. Nearly half, 47%, express a desire for its expansion to more firms within the industry.

Simon Francis, coordinator of the End Fuel Poverty Coalition, expressed concern stating, “Millions of households are already cutting back on essentials, and the worst of the bill rises are still to come.”

Robert Palmer, deputy director of Uplift, a group advocating for a fair transition away from North Sea oil, remarked, “People are aware they are facing a ‘Trump Tax,’ plain and simple. We are witnessing higher energy bills, soaring fuel prices, and pricier mortgages.”

Palmer added, “Our reliance on fossil fuels is impoverishing all of us, except for the oil and gas executives and shareholders who are set to profit at our expense.”

Regarding Trump’s push for increased drilling, Palmer emphasized that more drilling will not alleviate the financial burden on consumers nor significantly impact the UK’s gas supply due to the depletion of resources in the North Sea.

He advocated for a shift towards renewable energy sources like wind power and emphasized the importance of upgrading homes with solar energy and heat pumps to reduce dependence on oil and gas, ensuring a sustainable future.

Palmer concluded, “The Government must support individuals looking to enhance their homes for better control over energy costs, especially for those facing financial difficulties.”
