“UK & France Plan Strait of Hormuz Mission Amid Trump Opposition”

Date:

The UK and France are set to spearhead a “peaceful” initiative aimed at safeguarding the Strait of Hormuz to avert economic turmoil, as revealed by Keir Starmer. The Prime Minister disclosed that military strategists from numerous countries will convene in London next week to finalize plans for the mission, which will encompass mine clearance. However, in a recent social media outburst, Donald Trump expressed opposition to NATO countries providing assistance.

Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, the Prime Minister announced that the joint British-French operation will be initiated “when circumstances permit,” underscoring the critical importance of reopening the vital shipping lane as a global obligation. Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, Mr. Starmer affirmed, “Alongside France, the UK will lead a multinational mission to ensure freedom of navigation as soon as circumstances allow.”

He further stated, “This mission will be strictly defensive and peaceful, aimed at reassuring commercial vessels and aiding in mine clearance. We extend an invitation to all nations with a stake in global trade to join our efforts.” Several countries have already signaled their willingness to contribute, with over a dozen nations offering assets.

Addressing world leaders at a summit in Paris, the PM stressed, “The reopening of the strait is not only a global necessity but a global responsibility.” The summit convened representatives from 49 nations to discuss measures to secure the 104-mile waterway, responsible for transporting 20% of the world’s oil and natural gas supplies.

The strait had been effectively closed following the initiation of hostilities by Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu against Iran in late February, triggering a surge in petrol prices worldwide and raising concerns of potential shortages if the conflict persists.

Iran recently announced the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to shipping, a move welcomed by Trump. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated, “After the situation in the Hormuz Strait was resolved, NATO contacted me offering assistance. I instructed them to stay away unless they are interested in loading their ships with oil. They were ineffective when needed, merely a Paper Tiger!”

During a press conference in Paris, Mr. Starmer reiterated that the forthcoming mission is purely defensive and follows a ceasefire agreement. The US and Iran are currently observing a delicate truce scheduled to last until April 22, while Israel and Lebanon have initiated a 10-day ceasefire.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declared, “In alignment with the Lebanon ceasefire, the Strait of Hormuz is completely open for commercial vessels during the remaining ceasefire period, following the coordinated route previously announced by the Ports and Maritime Organization of the Islamic Republic of Iran.” Trump acknowledged Iran’s announcement of the strait being fully operational but affirmed that the US embargo on Iranian ports would persist until all transactions with Iran were finalized.
