Due to the ongoing fuel crisis triggered by conflicts in the Middle East, two additional airlines have been compelled to increase their ticket prices.
The disruption in air travel has been significant, marked by flight cancellations and a substantial surge in jet fuel costs following US-Israeli strikes that began on February 28, 2026. This crisis was exacerbated by Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for around 20% of the world’s oil and gas, resulting in a global shortage.
In response to the escalating jet fuel expenses, airlines like Air France and KLM, both under the Air France–KLM company, have found it necessary to raise their fares. These airlines had previously introduced a surcharge last month to counter the soaring fuel prices. Initially, economy ticket prices were increased by an additional €50 (£43.47) for a round trip.
With the latest price hike announcement, a long-haul round trip with Air France or KLM could now incur an extra €50, making the total fuel surcharge €100 (£86.98) on top of the base fare. Additionally, flights to destinations like the United States, Canada, and Mexico may see a €70 (£60.89) increase, while an economy round trip could cost an extra €10 (£8.70).
Notably, beyond Air France and KLM, other airlines are also adjusting prices in response to the fuel crisis. Virgin Atlantic, for instance, has raised ticket costs, adding a £50 fuel surcharge to economy-class tickets, with premium economy and business class fares climbing by £180 and £360, respectively.
Virgin Atlantic’s Chief Executive, Corneel Koster, cautioned passengers about potential further price escalations in the near future. He expressed concerns about the unprecedented levels of jet fuel prices, highlighting the challenges faced by airlines in sustaining high operating costs.
While current fuel supplies remain stable, Koster acknowledged uncertainties in the future supply chain. He emphasized the airline’s contractual diversification with multiple fuel suppliers to mitigate risks associated with potential fuel shortages in the upcoming months.
In a bid to offset the escalating fuel expenses, airlines like JetBlue have also increased luggage fees. For off-peak economy fares, passengers could expect a $4 (£2.95) increase in bag fees, reaching $39 (£28.79), while peak economy fares might see a rise to $49 (£36.17) for baggage charges.
