Reform UK is facing calls to remove its housing spokesperson after his comments regarding the Grenfell Tower fire were deemed insensitive. An inquiry into the Grenfell Tower fire determined that the 72 deaths could have been prevented and highlighted systemic failures in government and the construction industry spanning decades in addressing fire safety risks in high-rise buildings.
Mr. Dudley, appointed as Reform’s housing spokesperson, pledged to lead a review of Britain’s building challenges, proposing reforms in planning, housing delivery, and national infrastructure. In an interview, he criticized the post-Grenfell building safety regulations as ineffective, emphasizing that tragedies are inevitable in life.
The establishment of the Building Safety Regulator post-Grenfell aimed to ensure the safe design and construction of high-risk buildings but faced criticism for delays. The government introduced reforms to expedite high-rise construction approvals and enhance safety measures.
