Nigel Farage has dismissed Reform’s housing chief for his insensitive remarks regarding the Grenfell Tower fire, where he referred to it as a “tragedy” but callously added that “everyone dies in the end.”
Simon Dudley, a former executive at Homes England and the Ebbsfleet Development Corporation, faced backlash for his appalling statement. He suggested that regulations had swung too far following the tragic fire that claimed 72 lives.
In an interview with Inside Housing magazine, Mr. Dudley callously remarked, “Sadly, you know, everyone dies in the end. It’s just how you go, right?” This remark angered relatives of the victims who found it heartless.
Mr. Dudley further criticized building safety regulations post-Grenfell, labeling them as ineffective. Grenfell United, representing the bereaved families and survivors, condemned his comments as not only insensitive but dehumanizing.
The group emphasized that the victims were failed, trapped in a building supposed to be safe, and in a fire that should never have occurred. They criticized reducing the deaths to inevitability, highlighting the preventable nature of the tragedy.
Nigel Farage announced in a press conference that Mr. Dudley has been removed from his role as a spokesman, citing the inappropriateness of his words. Opposition leader Keir Starmer also called for Mr. Dudley’s dismissal, labeling his comments as “shameful.”
Housing charity Shelter’s CEO, Sarah Elliott, denounced Mr. Dudley’s remarks, emphasizing the avoidable nature of the Grenfell Tower fire deaths. She stressed the need for safe and affordable housing for all, rejecting the notion of compromising safety for housing needs.
The Grenfell Inquiry confirmed that the 72 deaths were entirely preventable and highlighted decades of neglect by authorities and the construction industry regarding fire safety in high-rise buildings.
Housing Secretary Steve Reed joined the chorus of criticism, urging Nigel Farage to dismiss Mr. Dudley immediately. He labeled Mr. Dudley’s comments as disgraceful and untenable in his position.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan condemned Mr. Dudley’s remarks as sickeningly insensitive, lacking decency and respect for the lives lost in the tragedy. He characterized Reform’s behavior as revealing their true nature rather than being a mere mistake.
