Wheelchair User Alleges Discrimination at Nightclub

Date:

A woman in a wheelchair has criticized a well-known nightclub, alleging that she was asked to leave by the manager due to being considered a ‘fire risk’. Maddie Haining, 18, claims she was expelled from Club Tropicana on Manchester’s bustling Canal Street during the early hours of Saturday, an incident she described as degrading.

In a video posted on Instagram under the handle maddieiswheelycool, Maddie is seen interacting with two staff members, one of whom she praised for being respectful while describing the manager as unpleasant and disrespectful.

According to Maddie, the manager threatened to fine her for violating fire regulations, to which she defiantly responded. She then cited the Equality Act 2010 to the bar staff, emphasizing that denying access to someone in a wheelchair is unlawful.

Despite the door staff having no issues with her wheelchair upon entry with friends at 2 am, Maddie was later told she had to leave because of being a ‘safety risk’. Recounting the incident, she stated that security initially assisted her inside, but the manager later insisted she depart due to her wheelchair being a safety hazard without providing valid reasons.

Maddie highlighted that she had conversed with two company directors who informed her of an internal investigation concerning the manager’s conduct, a development she welcomed. The Mirror reached out to the bar’s owners for a statement, with a spokesperson indicating an ongoing internal inquiry and refraining from further comments at the time.
