The Winter Olympics kick off with a grand ceremony at Milan’s renowned San Siro Stadium, featuring performances by Mariah Carey and Andrea Bocelli. The British team, filled with promising young athletes, is expected to compete for up to eight medals in Italy, as projected by UK Sport.
Spanning various locations in northern Italy, the 25th winter games will witness celebrations in Predazzo, Livigno, and Cortina d’Ampezzo. Team GB is anticipated to achieve its best-ever medal count, aiming to surpass the record of five medals set in Sochi 2014 and Pyeongchang 2018. Ice skating duo Lewis Gibson and Lilah Fear, likened to the legendary Torvill and Dean, have a chance to secure the nation’s first Olympic figure skating medal since 1994.
Lilah Fear, the 26-year-old ice dancer, expressed overwhelming joy and pride upon being selected as the flagbearer alongside bobsleigh pilot Brad Hall for the opening ceremony. British curlers are primed to build on their success from 2022, especially after the women’s team claimed gold. Notably, world champion Matt Weston and his teammate Marcus Wyatt are among the top contenders in the skeleton event.
Key medal prospects also include Mia Brookes, Kirsty Muir, Zoe Atkin, and Charlotte Bankes. These athletes stand a chance to secure the nation’s first gold or silver medal on snow. The event, running until Feb 22 with coverage on the BBC, will see nearly 3,000 athletes from 90 countries competing for 116 medals at Milan-Cortina. Team GB’s strong contingent of 53 athletes is already in action, with Wyatt poised to challenge Weston in the men’s skeleton competition.
In addition to individual events, mixed team competitions and various disciplines such as bobsleigh and curling will feature Team GB’s talented athletes aiming for podium finishes.
