Donald Trump has responded to criticism for his remarks about Pope Leo. Giorgia Meloni, the Prime Minister of Italy, condemned Trump’s outburst against the Pope as inappropriate. In turn, the US president stated that it is Meloni who is unacceptable.
During an interview with Corriere della Sera, Trump expressed his surprise at the Italian PM’s statements. He also issued a strong warning regarding Iran’s nuclear capabilities, highlighting his concerns about potential threats to Italy.
Trump emphasized, “She is unacceptable because she shows indifference towards Iran possessing a nuclear weapon, which could pose a significant danger to Italy.” He further stated that Italy and its leadership have undergone changes, implying a shift in their relationship.
Despite their previous alliance, Trump noted the lack of recent communication with Meloni. In a post on Truth Social, he criticized Pope Leo for being weak on crime and foreign policy, condemning the idea of Iran possessing a nuclear weapon.
Trump declined to apologize to Pope Leo and attempted to clarify a deleted social media post where he appeared as Jesus, claiming he mistook the image for a doctor. Addressing reporters at the White House, he stood by his comments, asserting that Pope Leo’s stance on Iran and other issues does not warrant an apology.
Following the Pope’s response to Trump’s criticism, wherein he emphasized the Vatican’s commitment to peace and reconciliation, Trump reiterated his concerns about Iran and crime. The Pope underscored the disparity between his message rooted in the Gospel and the actions of the Trump administration, affirming his dedication to the church’s mission in the modern world.
