Former boxer, David Newton, 70, was recently convicted for the brutal murder of retired postmistress Una Crown, 86, in 2013. Newton, who had evaded suspicion for 12 years, was linked to the crime through DNA evidence found on Una’s nail clippings.
The case, featured in Channel 4’s 24 Hours in Police Custody, showcases the diligent efforts of Det Supt Iain Moor and his team in bringing closure to Una’s family. Newton, nicknamed “The Shovel” due to his large hands, callously joked about his daughters’ safety while in police custody.
Initially overlooked as a non-suspicious death, Una’s murder investigation suffered setbacks including the loss of crucial forensic evidence. However, advancements in forensic techniques uncovered male DNA under Una’s fingernails, leading to Newton’s arrest and subsequent conviction.
During the trial, it was revealed that Newton gained access to Una’s home using a duplicate key and brutally attacked her before stealing money. Justice was served when the jury unanimously found Newton guilty after lengthy deliberations.
Newton was sentenced to a minimum of 21 years for his merciless assault on the defenseless elderly woman. Despite initial investigative missteps, Cambridgeshire Constabulary expressed regret to Una’s family and emphasized the significance of DNA evidence in solving the case.
The shocking case of Una Crown’s murder serves as a reminder of the tireless efforts of law enforcement in seeking justice for victims of heinous crimes. Viewers can follow the detailed investigation on Channel 4’s 24 Hours in Police Custody airing on Monday and Tuesday.
