Sir Nick Faldo acknowledged Rory McIlroy’s exceptional golfing talent, stopping short of labeling him as the absolute best. McIlroy, aged 36, further solidified his position in golf by successfully defending his Masters title at Augusta with a one-under-par round of 71, surpassing world No.1 Scottie Scheffler. This victory marked McIlroy’s sixth major championship win and made him the fourth player in history to achieve back-to-back Masters triumphs, joining the ranks of Jack Nicklaus, Faldo, and Tiger Woods.
Following his previous Masters victory that completed the career Grand Slam, McIlroy’s status among golf’s elite was discussed by Faldo. Despite being a six-time major champion himself, Faldo placed McIlroy above him in the golf hierarchy but highlighted that there are still greater figures in the sport, ranking McIlroy fifth among all-time greats like Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Nicklaus, and Woods.
Faldo compared McIlroy to past golfing legends, emphasizing the different eras in which they played. He expressed his belief that McIlroy’s Grand Slam achievement elevated him to a distinct category, suggesting that the previous year’s victory could propel him to win more majors.
After his recent win, McIlroy expressed gratitude to his wife Erica Stoll and their daughter Poppy for their unwavering support.
