“Florida Teen Charged with Stepsister’s Cruise Ship Murder”

Date:

A teenage boy in Florida is facing charges of murder and aggravated sexual abuse in connection with the death of his stepsister while on a cruise ship.

The US Justice Department announced on April 13 that Timothy Hudson, a 16-year-old, had been charged in relation to the incident. Hudson was initially charged in February and formally indicted on March 10, but the full extent of the case was only revealed after a seal was lifted recently following a court decision to prosecute him as an adult.

The victim, 18-year-old Anna Kepner, was found dead under a bed in a cabin she shared with two other teenagers, including her stepbrother, on the Carnival Horizon cruise ship in November. The cause of her death was determined to be mechanical asphyxia, which occurs when breathing is obstructed by an object or physical force.

Anna’s father expressed the family’s reliance on the justice system to seek the truth with care and integrity. He also voiced concern that despite the serious charges, Hudson had not been detained, causing deep distress and complexity for the family.

Since his arrest in February, Hudson has been under the care of an uncle and has not been in custody. The accused, who pleaded not guilty to the initial charges, remains free pending further legal proceedings.

Anna, a cheerleader at Temple Christian School in Titusville, Florida, was remembered as a vibrant soul at her memorial service, where attendees were encouraged to wear bright colors in her honor.

While it is uncommon for teens to be prosecuted in federal court, Hudson’s case has taken that course. Prosecutors have raised objections to his release, citing concerns about his potential danger, and have requested a review of the current order now that he is being charged as an adult.

Assistant US Attorney Alejandra López highlighted the gravity of the situation, noting that the accused allegedly committed the crimes against a victim he was supposed to see as a sibling, despite no apparent conflict in their relationship.
