Pubs across England are witnessing a surge in ticket sales as fans eagerly secure spots to watch upcoming World Cup matches, even though the tournament is still two months away. Many fans are eager to secure prime viewing spots at pubs with outdoor spaces or fan zones, with some establishments reporting stronger demand compared to previous tournaments at this stage.
This increased interest in tickets coincides with the Home Office’s relaxation of licensing laws, allowing pubs to extend their opening hours for all England and Scotland matches during the World Cup. The tournament, taking place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, will see England playing their three group stage matches starting at either 9pm or 10pm, beginning with Croatia on June 19.
The hospitality industry is set to benefit from the extended licensing hours permitted by the Home Office for England and Wales during matches in the knockout stages. Pubs can now serve alcohol until 1am for games starting between 5pm and 9pm, and until 2am for later fixtures kicking off between 9pm and 10pm.
This decision follows adjustments to earlier proposals, ensuring that fans watching evening knockout matches will also enjoy the extended hours. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood emphasized the importance of fans staying in pubs to support their teams during the tournament.
Various pubs, such as Big Penny Social in Walthamstow and Flat Iron Square near London Bridge, are already experiencing high demand for tickets, with limited space available for certain games. Managers from these establishments have advised booking early, citing past instances of quickly sold-out events.
Tim Martin, the head of JD Wetherspoon, highlighted the company’s intent to show World Cup games, acknowledging the anticipated boost in trade during major matches. The Gosta Green pub in Birmingham, popular among students, is preparing for an influx of bookings as the tournament draws nearer, boasting multiple screens, including a large mega-screen.
As the excitement builds for the upcoming World Cup, fans and pubs alike are gearing up for an unforgettable tournament experience.
