“Woodgreen Charity Transforms Troubled Dog’s Behavior”

Date:

After Michelle Hanley’s children moved out, she sought a way to fill the void in her home. Drawing from her fond memories of having a German Shepherd in her youth, the 53-year-old educator decided it was time to bring a dog back into her life. Following thorough research on different breeds, she opted for an Italian Greyhound renowned for its gentle demeanor and loving personality. Welcoming 12-week-old Dante into her home affirmed her choice.

Expressing her affection for Italian Greyhounds, Michelle emphasized their gentle nature, labeling Dante as well-behaved, albeit with the typical puppy energy. Initially, everything proceeded smoothly, but at around eight months of age, Dante’s behavior took a drastic turn following unsettling encounters with other dogs.

Recalling the incidents where Dante faced aggression from certain dogs, Michelle noted a significant shift in his demeanor, manifesting as anxiety, incessant barking, and pulling on walks when encountering other dogs. Seeking assistance from a local trainer proved futile as Dante’s behavior continued to deteriorate, causing distress for Michelle, who felt anxious and reluctant to walk him due to his unpredictable reactions.

Fearing the possibility of having to part ways with Dante, Michelle’s outlook changed when she discovered Woodgreen, a charity in Cambridgeshire dedicated to supporting pets and their owners nationwide. Through Woodgreen’s comprehensive services, including expert advice, in-home assistance, and rehoming initiatives, Michelle and Dante became one of the numerous pet-owner pairs benefiting from the organization’s aid.

Upon engaging with Woodgreen around 18 months ago, Michelle connected with Woodgreen’s lead outreach officer, Steph Drake, who visited her Bedford residence and accompanied her on walks to evaluate Dante’s behavior firsthand. Steph swiftly identified subtle signs of stress in Dante, such as pinned ears, tense posture, and vigilant scanning of his surroundings, attributing his aggressive displays to underlying fear rather than inherent aggression.

Steph coached Michelle on interpreting Dante’s body language and responding calmly during stressful interactions, leading to remarkable improvements in Dante’s behavior. By redirecting Dante’s focus and offering reassurance in soothing tones during challenging moments, Michelle witnessed a noticeable calming effect on him.

Woodgreen’s mission revolves around ensuring every pet enjoys a nurturing environment while extending support to pet owners to facilitate this goal. Whether responding to urgent requests, distributing essential supplies, conducting community health checks, or providing practical guidance, the organization stands prepared to assist pet owners in maintaining their bond with their beloved companions.

In cases where separation becomes unavoidable, Woodgreen continues to offer care and shelter to pets, ensuring they receive the compassion and support needed until they find new loving homes. Steph’s recommendations, including opting for shorter, quieter walks and concluding each walk positively while Dante remained composed, proved instrumental in reshaping Dante’s behavior.

Recognizing the influence of her emotions during walks, Michelle learned to manage her anxiety, realizing its inadvertent reinforcement of Dante’s unease. Steph, drawing on her background in clinical animal behavior, elaborated on the interconnectedness of owner and pet emotions, highlighting the impact of Michelle’s tension on Dante’s behavior.

The positive outcomes of their collaborative efforts have been transformative, with Michelle affirming significant progress in managing Dante’s behavior, experiencing issues only sporadically and expressing optimism about complete behavior modification. Grateful for Steph’s guidance, Michelle underscored the importance of building trust with Dante and persevering in implementing the recommended strategies.

Reflecting on Dante’s remarkable transformation, Steph commended Michelle’s dedication, noting Dante’s enhanced confidence, happiness, and relaxation. Michelle’s commitment to the process, coupled with Dante’s receptiveness to the newfound approach, culminated in a positive shift, allowing Dante to explore new experiences with increased freedom and assurance.
