Waymo gears up for snowy Toronto launch

Date:

Waymo is set to begin operations in Toronto, facing the challenge of navigating snowy conditions. The company announced its plans to commence testing in Canada’s largest city with human drivers in the coming days for mapping and safety validation purposes. Waymo aims to introduce driverless cabs for public use by 2028 in Toronto.

To ensure adaptability to Toronto’s unique driving conditions, tests will be conducted throughout all hours and days of the week. Steven Waslander, a professor at the University of Toronto’s Robotics Institute, highlighted the significance of Toronto’s winter conditions as a major challenge for Waymo, unlike its operations in warmer cities like Los Angeles and Phoenix.

The effectiveness of autonomous cars heavily relies on sensors such as cameras, radar, and lidar systems to make decisions while driving. However, adverse weather conditions like snow can impair these systems, affecting the vehicle’s ability to detect objects accurately. Waymo has been accumulating data from snowy regions like upstate New York and Michigan to improve its autonomous driving system’s performance in challenging weather conditions.

In preparation for its launch in Toronto, Waymo is enhancing its technology with features like heaters and mini windshield wipers to keep sensors clear from ice and snow. The company also utilizes cars as “mobile weather stations” to collect real-time weather data, ensuring safer navigation.

Although Waymo has not yet validated its driverless system for snowy conditions, it is actively working on enhancing its capabilities. The company plans to gradually optimize its autonomous driving technology over the years, potentially introducing a phased approach to ensure safety and efficiency in all weather conditions.
