Madeline Buss, a resident of Vancouver, recounts her experience of signing a lease for her first apartment while her mother was transferred to the ICU on the same day. Juggling feelings of guilt and concern, Madeline reflects on her unconventional parental relationship with her mother, who has faced numerous health challenges. Despite her mother’s health struggles, Madeline made the decision to pursue her educational goals away from home, supported by her stepfather’s encouragement to prioritize her own well-being.
Throughout her teenage years, Madeline took on caregiving responsibilities for her mother, especially during a period of declining health before the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the challenges, she ultimately decided to move away for university, realizing that living in constant fear for her mother’s well-being was hindering her own growth and development.
Acknowledging the importance of caring for loved ones while also allowing others to care for her, Madeline highlights the evolving nature of her relationship with her mother. Supported by her stepfather, who has taken on many of the caregiving duties, Madeline has come to terms with not being physically present at all times, finding solace in the moments of connection and support shared with her mother over the phone.
As her mother underwent a heart transplant and subsequent recovery, Madeline navigated the complexities of guilt and distance, gradually finding peace in accepting her role in her own life’s journey. Despite the ongoing emotional challenges, Madeline embraces the transition from a passive observer to an active participant in shaping her future.
