Before your trip to the airport, it’s essential to understand the hand luggage restrictions and duty-free regulations, which vary among airlines like TUI and Ryanair.
Travelers often fly with different airlines based on factors like destination, airport, and cost, making it challenging to keep track of varying hand luggage policies. Most airlines allow passengers to bring a small personal bag for free, such as a backpack or handbag, while some also permit a complimentary cabin bag.
Confusion can arise regarding carrying duty-free items in addition to personal or cabin bags. Holidaymakers often wonder if they can carry duty-free separately or if they need to pack it within their bags.
To ensure you are well-prepared for your next trip, we have summarized the key hand luggage guidelines for four major UK airlines. This information will help you understand the size requirements for your bag and how to manage duty-free items before boarding.
Regarding duty-free items, Ryanair permits passengers to bring duty-free purchases along with their cabin bags. Additionally, travelers can opt for checked bags of various weights when flying with Ryanair.
All Ryanair fares include a small personal bag (40 x 30 x 20 cm) that must fit under the seat. There is no specific weight limit for this bag, typically a handbag or laptop bag, but passengers must be able to carry it onboard.
With Priority boarding, passengers can bring an additional 10kg cabin bag (55 x 40 x 20cm) for overhead storage. Infants have no cabin allowance, but parents can bring a 5kg baby bag and two baby items onboard. For more details, visit the Ryanair website.
For easyJet, all travelers are allowed one small bag for free (45 x 36 x 20 cm) to fit under the seat. An additional cabin bag can be purchased for overhead storage, along with the Speedy Boarding service. EasyJet Plus members and Inclusive Plus fare customers can carry a large cabin bag onboard.
TUI customers can bring one hand luggage piece (55 x 40 x 20cm) for free, along with a small personal bag. Duty-free items are allowed, with specific instructions for liquids. Checked bags are available for an additional fee. Visit the TUI website for more information.
Jet2 passengers can bring a small bag (40 x 30 x 20cm) or a duty-free bag under the seat. One hand luggage piece (56 x 45 x 25cm) is free, with an additional 10kg allowance for infants. Parents can also bring two items per child onboard.
When packing hand luggage, be aware of general restrictions across airlines, such as limitations on liquids, lighters, food, powders, frozen items, and sharp objects. Check with your airline for specific rules to avoid issues at security.
