“UK Health Secretary Slams Kanye West’s Wireless Festival Gig”

Date:

Wes Streeting has criticized Wireless festival organizers for their decision to feature Kanye West, saying they should feel ashamed. The Home Office is reviewing whether the US rapper, also known as Ye, should be permitted to enter the UK following past antisemitic remarks. Kanye West is scheduled to perform at the London music festival for three nights in July.

Health Secretary Mr. Streeting expressed his dismay at West’s actions, accusing him of using his bipolar disorder as an excuse. Festival Republic, the festival’s promoter, defended the planned performance, citing West’s legal right to enter and perform in the UK, despite calls for him to be banned due to previous antisemitic behavior.

In response to inquiries about West being barred from the country, Mr. Streeting refrained from prejudicing the Home Office’s decision, emphasizing that Kanye West should not headline the Wireless festival. He criticized the organizers for what he described as a significant error in judgment, highlighting a pattern of behavior rather than isolated incidents.

Mentioning West’s track titled “Heil Hitler” and the subsequent use of bipolar disorder as a justification, Mr. Streeting condemned the rapper’s actions and the festival organizers for supporting him. He emphasized the seriousness of antisemitism and the responsibility public figures like Kanye West hold in combating such hate.

West has expressed willingness to meet with the British Jewish community ahead of his Wireless performance, aiming to demonstrate change through his music. Despite Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s concerns about the decision to feature West at the festival, sponsors Diageo and Pepsi have withdrawn their support. The Home Secretary faces pressure to prevent West from entering the UK, with critics arguing his presence would not be in the public interest.

Melvin Benn, managing director at Festival Republic, defended West’s performance, asserting the rapper’s legal right to enter the UK and perform. He emphasized that the festival aims to provide a platform for West’s music, not his opinions. Presale tickets for Wireless Festival are set to be released soon, with general sales opening shortly thereafter.
