Shabana Mahmood has prolonged an agreement with France aimed at preventing migrants from embarking on small boats in Northern France.
Following eleventh-hour discussions, the Home Secretary made the announcement just before the agreement’s midnight expiration. Initially established in 2023, the deal involves the UK funding French beach patrols to disrupt smuggling operations.
The Home Office disclosed that French law enforcement and intelligence efforts will persist for an additional two months, costing £16.2 million. A dedicated team of 700 officers will conduct continuous patrols along the French coastline to intercept small boats.
Ongoing negotiations will seek to enhance the agreement during the extension period. Mahmood stated, “Our collaboration with France has thwarted 42,000 illegal migrant attempts to cross the Channel. As we refine a new and improved UK-France agreement, French law enforcement operations to prevent illegal migration within France will proceed. I am committed to restoring order and security at our borders.”
A spokesperson from the Home Office emphasized, “The Home Secretary is negotiating rigorously with the French to secure the best possible deal for the British public, preventing illegal migrant crossings across the Channel and maximizing the value of our investment.”
Initially introduced in 2023, the previous Conservative government declared that the £478 million package would finance a new detention facility in France and deploy additional law enforcement personnel along the French coast.
Subsequently, the number of crossings has surged, with 41,472 individuals arriving in the UK via small boats in 2025.
Xavier Ducept, France’s junior minister for the sea, criticized the UK for imposing conditions that endanger asylum seekers’ lives. According to Le Monde, he expressed in a French parliamentary commission of inquiry, “We expect the British to contribute to funding interception systems, which are highly costly. However, this funding should not be contingent on an efficiency standard that could pose extreme risks to migrants, security services, and France. Prioritizing rescue and adherence to the law is imperative.”
