UK Considers Blocking Trump from Bases for Iran Strikes

Date:

The United Kingdom is considering denying Donald Trump access to British military bases for potential strikes on Iran’s power plants and bridges following the U.S. President’s warning of potential catastrophic consequences. Trump has issued a deadline for Iran to lift its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, threatening severe military action if the demand is not met. However, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has indicated that British bases will only be used for defensive purposes, not offensive strikes on civilian infrastructure.

The UK has previously allowed the U.S. to utilize RAF Fairford and Diego Garcia for defensive operations targeting Iranian missile sites. Any requests for using UK assets for strikes on power plants and bridges have not been received by the UK government so far. The Prime Minister’s office emphasized that the UK’s stance on military cooperation with the U.S. remains focused on collective self-defense and degrading missile capabilities threatening regional security.

In response to inquiries about potential involvement in offensive actions against civilian infrastructure, the UK government declined to provide detailed comments on allied operations. The official spokesperson reiterated the commitment to using UK bases for defensive purposes in the region, particularly to safeguard against missile threats targeting ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

Cabinet minister Wes Streeting praised Keir Starmer for maintaining a cautious approach and avoiding military entanglement in the Iran conflict as tensions escalate with Trump’s ultimatums. The UK remains steadfast in its position of non-involvement in the conflict and prioritizes diplomatic solutions over military actions.

Regarding the potential consequences of U.S. military actions on Iran’s civilian infrastructure, government officials refrained from labeling it as a war crime but emphasized the UK’s stance of steering clear of direct involvement in the conflict. Streeting commended the Prime Minister’s prudent decision-making and criticized other political figures for their inconsistent positions on the matter.

Military representatives from various countries convened to discuss strategies for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway currently blockaded by Iran. Efforts are underway to secure the passage once hostilities subside, aiming to ensure the uninterrupted flow of global oil shipments through the region.

Despite Trump’s reiterated threats against Iran’s civilian infrastructure, the UK Ministry of Defence emphasized that British bases are authorized for defensive missions only, targeting specific threats to British interests and regional stability. The UK government maintains a cautious stance on military cooperation, focusing on defensive actions to protect British assets in the region.
