“UK and Italy Join Forces to Fight Mafia-Style Smuggling Rings”

Date:

British and Italian law enforcement authorities are teaming up to combat smuggling rings in a Mafia-style crackdown, as disclosed by The Mirror. A new taskforce comprising crime agencies and government officials will adopt a “follow the money” strategy during a crucial meeting in Rome. This specialized squad aims to employ tactics refined by Italian authorities to strip assets from Mob leaders.

The two countries will exchange intelligence regarding funds associated with organized immigration networks. They are also prepared to collaborate in confiscating the illicit profits of criminal organizations involved in smuggling individuals across Europe.

Representatives from the National Crime Agency (NCA), Italian police, and officials from the UK and Italy will convene in Rome to establish the Joint Illicit Finance Taskforce. This initiative will involve joint efforts by UK and Italian law enforcement to dismantle high-harm criminal operations. Cooperation will extend to other European nations by sharing crucial information to dismantle criminal syndicates.

In a recent statement, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni emphasized alignment with Keir Starmer on combating illegal immigration. Both leaders have committed to a joint effort against people smuggling.

Furthermore, the recent unveiling of the Border Security, Asylum, and Immigration Bill by the government introduces measures akin to counter-terrorism powers to combat smugglers. The legislation empowers authorities to seize electronic devices from individuals arriving via small boats and allows for preemptive arrests of smugglers before perilous journeys occur. The bill also proposes harsh penalties, including up to 14 years in prison for those involved in selling or handling small boat components.

In addition, individuals aiding smuggling networks by providing logistical details for journeys will face prosecution. The bill introduces a new offense for aggressive or intimidating behavior at sea.

The government’s focus is on dismantling smuggling rings facilitating treacherous Channel crossings, which led to the tragic deaths of an estimated 78 individuals, including children, in the past year.

A Border Security Summit in London scheduled between March 31 and April 1 is expected to draw representatives from over 40 nations to address these critical issues.
