Tumbler Ridge, BC – Tumbler Ridge Secondary School’s demolition marked a significant moment for resident Chris Norbury, whose wife was present during the tragic mass shooting in February. Norbury, a longtime community member, joined others to witness the dismantling of the school on Monday.
The school, built in the 1980s during the coal mining boom in Tumbler Ridge, has been a hub of memories for generations of students over the past four decades. However, following the traumatic events of February 10, students and teachers expressed a strong desire to not return to the building and advocated for its removal to aid in the healing process.
The demolition signifies a new beginning for Tumbler Ridge, as Norbury emphasized the importance of concluding old chapters to pave the way for new ones. The community is now focused on recovery and moving forward from the tragedy that claimed the lives of five students and an education assistant.
Currently, students are attending classes at a temporary campus while plans for a new school are in progress. Additional facilities, including modular classrooms, administrative offices, and a child-care center, are being set up to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment.
Looking ahead, the site of the former school will be transformed into a grass field, while discussions about permanent memorials and future use of the property are ongoing. Mayor Darryl Krakowka highlighted the importance of honoring the wishes of the victims’ families in the memorial planning process.
The municipality is actively engaging with residents to develop a comprehensive long-term community recovery plan, with provincial and federal support being extended. The focus remains on listening to the needs and concerns of students, families, and community members to ensure a successful recovery process.
As plans for the new school take shape, the community anticipates a fresh start and a brighter future. Norbury expressed optimism for the upcoming new school and the opportunities it will bring to Tumbler Ridge.
