Donald Trump had to be evacuated by Secret Service agents following a shooting incident at the White House correspondents’ dinner. The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from Torrance, California, entered the Washington Hilton hotel foyer where the President, Melania Trump, JD Vance, and numerous journalists were attending the annual event. The armed suspect was taken into custody after reportedly shooting a US Secret Service agent at close range, who luckily survived due to wearing a bullet-proof vest.
The incident occurred around 8:35 pm US time on Saturday night, prompting Trump to be quickly escorted out of the ballroom for safety. The President, along with the First Lady, was in conversation when chaos erupted, leading to Secret Service agents swiftly moving Trump to safety. The attacker, armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives, fired several shots during the altercation.
Following the shooting, Trump referred to the suspect as a “lone wolf whack job” and mentioned that Allen had expressed intentions of targeting Trump administration officials. Despite having no prior criminal record, Allen’s actions led to a press conference where Trump praised the brave actions of the Secret Service members involved in subduing the assailant.
Authorities are currently investigating Allen’s home in Torrance, California, seeking further insights into the incident. The injured Secret Service officer has been discharged from the hospital, with Trump commending his bravery and resilience. The President emphasized the dangerous nature of his job, acknowledging his wife’s concerns for his safety amidst the ongoing threats.
