Passengers are advised to avoid traveling beyond one UK city by train until mid-week following a derailment caused by a landslide at 80mph. The incident occurred near Shap village in Cumbria when an Avanti West Coast service from Glasgow to Euston went off the tracks.
Eighty-seven individuals, including 10 staff members, were onboard, with four sustaining minor injuries. Avanti West Coast has instructed customers not to travel beyond Preston until recovery work is completed between Penrith North Lakes and Oxenholme Lake District. Destinations affected include Blackpool, Lancaster, Glasgow, and Edinburgh.
Passengers holding tickets for Monday and Tuesday can use them between Wednesday and Friday at no extra charge. Network Rail reported that the front coach of the 11-carriage train derailed during severe weather conditions. Initial assessments suggest the train collided with a landslide at high speed before coming to a stop.
All passengers were safely evacuated, and by mid-morning, everyone was transported to their destinations via alternative road transport. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with efforts focused on restoring the railway swiftly.
Emergency services have concluded their operations at the scene, with only four minor injuries reported among the 87 assessed individuals. Avanti West Coast expressed gratitude for the swift response of their staff, emergency services, and local support. Support is being provided to those impacted by the incident.
